Twin Oaks Valley Winery

Twin Oaks Valley Winery is located in San Marcos. This is a little bit unusual considering that most north county wineries are in either Temecula or Ramona, but Jacob Kappeler and his business partner Frank Bons, also neighbors, have found a niche for grapes on their combined lands. Jacob runs T&H Prime Meats & Sausages, an extensive butcher shop that makes a wide array of sausages made from chicken, turkey, pork, beef and even lamb. Frank used to grow roses but was eventually pushed out of the flower market by cheaper imports from South America. Together, they have 14 acres of vineyards planted with three types of grapes- Syrah, Cabernet Savignon, and Viogner. All of their wines are "estate" wines, meaning that they use only their own grapes, and they either perform themselves or oversee all parts of the winemaking process through to bottling. This is even more unusual, since most wineries around here buy at least some grapes from other estates. But Twin Oaks keeps it simple, with just five different wines. And not only can you get their label at T&H Meats, but you can find other local wines in the small wine-tasting/retail room adjacent to the butcher shop. Here's an interesting, though outdated article about them.

Nicole (not verified) — Wed, 05/14/2008 - 06:04I read about the butcher shop somewhere (on chowhound, I believe) and keep meaning to give their sausages a try. My sister lives in Escondido so I'm up there frequently. Hopefully I'll remember next time! Thanks for the info about the wine!
Great place to get sausages
Anonymous — Tue, 05/06/2008 - 14:35Great place to get sausages too! I had the morrocan lamb a couple weeks ago and loved it. My wife thought it was a bit strong, but she's a wuss :)
I think their sausages are on the menu at Stone World Bistro.
Thanks for the great website and I'm looking forward to the restaurant opening soon.
Stone sausages
admin — Fri, 05/09/2008 - 22:46Hi, thanks for your comment! I had the Moroccan lamb as well and thought it was delicious too. Yes, Stone Brewery provides the beer (Smoked Porter) that goes into their beer sausage, which is served at the brewery's restaurant, in addition to being available for purchase at the butcher shop- cool, huh?! We look forward to meeting you next month!
