About 160,000 pounds of shark (mostly thresher, as well as some mako, soupfin, and dogfish shark) were landed in San Diego in 2006. From fishing results, the biomass appears to be high, but studies are on-going in 2008 to determine if overfishing is occurring or not. Shark are generally a bycatch of swordfishing using drift gill nets.
Fishermen using set nets can catch up to 10 thresher shark per day. Not sure what the rules are with gill nets...
