Prawns

74,000 pounds of spot prawns were landed in San Diego in 2006 from February to October.
Until 2002 they were caught mostly by trawl gear. In 2003, trawl gear was outlawed because of the bycatch of the overfished bocaccio rockfish. Spot prawns are now only caught by trap and current harvest levels seem to be sustainable. Almost all spot prawns are sold live with prices over $10 per pound to the fishermen. Fresh, dead spot prawns are generally half the price of live prawns.
