The design of Sea Rocket Bistro was inspired by sea rocket itself. Our accent colors (green in the dining room, purple in the front) reflect the grass green leaves of the sea rocket plant and the pale lavender color of its delicate flowers. We wanted to exude a clean, contemporary atmosphere in a fun and casual way, stimulate social interaction on both sides of the restaurant, and provide a cozy and comfortable environment for everyone in the surrounding neighborhoods. We mixed a little vintage in with the new (1960s glass light fixtures from Architectural Salvage and reproduction mid-century modern sputnik chandelier) and used a natural cork product as the wainscot in the front room, which is a sustainable and non-toxic material as well as providing some much-needed sound absorption. Our overall goal was to give the restaurant enough of a face lift that it would be distinguishable from the restaurant that formerly occupied the space, and specifically to give it a new identity which would match the new concept, new menu, new management, and new staff.

We completely redesigned the front room (think big farmhouse style dinners with a contemporary twist) to foster a more interactive environment and to offer two different ways for guests to enjoy their meals- privately in the dining area or communally in the front room. The idea is for guests to be seated anywhere along our 20-foot table, across from their neighbors or new friends in the making. We think that a shared meal (or at least shared conversation over individual meals) makes eating that much more pleasurable, and we often see bars filled up with people who enjoy the company of others in the community, so we hope that this solution will satisfy that desire for more people, and be fun for all! Our tables were made from reclaimed solid pine wood doors that were salvaged from an estate in the South Bay and refinished by yours truly.

We hope you will enjoy our efforts to create an intimate and inviting eatery!
