How Local & How Direct?

In preparation for tomorrow's Food Justice Conference at City College, I did an analysis about where our food comes from. Here's what I found... of the $35,000 we spent on food in the first 4 months of the year, about 50% of that is local (100 miles). About 40% of it is regional food (1,000 miles), mainly from around California, Baja, and some off the coast of Oregon. About 10% of our food comes from other places entirely. Here's the fascinating (to me anyway) spreadsheet about where we spent our money over the past 4 months.
Another more interesting way of breaking up the numbers is how directly we support non-industrial regional farmers and fishermen. Time for another fun spreadsheet! 34% of the dollars we spent were directly to local and regional people who farm and catch our food. 62% went to distributors. More than half of that 62% was to Chesapeake Fish Company. They provide an indispensable service in sourcing, processing, and delivering local and regional fish, so we're happy to spend our money with them, even if we do also enjoy buying directly from San Diego fishermen when possible. Buying local farm-direct produce is an area where we can definitely do better in the future.
Every dollar spent is a vote. Vote wisely.

Man, you guys are awesome for

I love that you're so transparent in the way you run your business and I wish more restaurants worked this way - especially the ones that claim to support local farmer's/businesses and to be very environment-friendly.
Thanks Sea Rocket Bistro
