Fire on 30th

Last night we had a thought provoking experience at Sea Rocket. Some of you in the hood may have seen fire trucks and police cars blocking the street in front of the restaurant. The house next door which serves as a law office caught fire at around 9:30pm. I watched the flames from the back parking lot as the police and fire trucks arrived. As I watched the scene, I thought how important the space at 3382 30th Street is to the community of people who make it a restaurant, both to the people who eat and hang out there and to the people who work there. If it were to burn down, it could not be replaced. It could be rebuilt or the restaurant could be moved, but it would be a much different incarnation. The possibility of this happening was right before my eyes. Just like the land that our food grows on or the water that our fish live in are important, so are the space, the wood, the concrete, and the wear and tear on them. Fortunately, the fire was put out and the worst-case-scenario thoughts going through my head didn't materialize. Thanks to the San Diego fire department and police for taking care of business. The fire was started by dirty rags soaked with cleaning products that were sitting on top of a running dryer.

so glad all's ok!
