End of the Line

After you've seen Food Inc., be sure to check out End of the Line about overfishing. It's premiering at The Ken on July 10th and will be playing for a week. The Ken rocks, not just because they're showing this movie, but also because they only have one movie screen. The historic theater was built in 1946, so you'll also enjoy a stroll back in time. Hope to see you there!
In other media news, KPBS's These Days had a piece on the Marine Life Protection Act the other day.

First time at the Ken!
admin — Mon, 07/13/2009 - 21:46Well, I finally made it to the Ken after living in the area for quite some time... This film is excellent! Engrossing and presented in a very straightforward way, outlining the problem quite clearly but also offering suggestions that everyone can live by to help turn the tide of the overfishing problem. I highly recommend seeing it!

do many restaurants in SD
vera (not verified) — Thu, 07/23/2009 - 22:28do many restaurants in SD still serve endangered tuna?
what could be done about that?
response to question
admin — Tue, 07/28/2009 - 00:21Hi Vera,
I don't eat sushi all that much, but you definitely still see bluefin tuna on the lists locally, so I would say a) don't eat at those places, and b) call them to tell them that you're not going to eat there because they have an endangered species on their menu and it's unacceptable. If you say something like "I really like sushi and would love to eat at your restaurant but I refuse to support any business who puts endangered species (or overfished species, or unsustainably caught species, etc.) on their menu, that might catch their ears. No one wants to hear that they are losing potential business, but people who boycott places for certain reasons may also not necessarily tell those businesses, in which case they may stay oblivious to the problem indefinitely. Give managements a reason and an incentive to change old habits. I want to stop frequenting a ton of restaurants who all use styrofoam to-go boxes (and sometimes even styrofoam plates for every meal served!!) but I know it will do no good unless I complain about it to them directly and tell them that I won't come back until they stop using it.
Good luck!
Elena
