Ballast Point Brewing: Mesa distributes their regular 5 beers and they distribute their specialty beers themselves.
858-695-2739 Main Office/Sales, 619-298-2337 Brewery, Linda Vista
Regular Beers: Wahoo Wheat, Yellowtail Pale Ale, Calico Amber, Big Eye IPA, Black Marlin Porter- all are available both in kegs (1/2 barrel & 5 gallon) and bottles (22 oz.) Pale Ale, Amber & IPA are also bottled in 12 oz.
Specialty Beers are available on a rotating basis, mostly just in kegs, but some limited quantities are bottled.
Session Beers are low-alcohol content beers available seasonally, made like an IPA.
Yellowtail Pale Ale- more like a German Kolsch than other pale ales, closer to a Pilsner than American Pale Ale- yeast is fermented at ale temperatures then crashed like Pilsner so body is full but then disappears faster = clean finish. Their biggest seller. Recommended w/delicate fishes. Low hops.
Wahoo Wheat- unfiltered wheat beer w/bitter orange peel & coriander, usually garnished w/orange. Lemon will overpower spice properties. German Hefeweizens are more clovey or bananay in character, while this wheat beer is more of a Belgian style Wit. Low hops. If yeast settles (about 2 weeks), shake keg so beer is cloudy.
Calico Amber (5.5%)- Gold Medal winner- American style, very spicy- blend of 4 different hops, gets toffee flavors out of grains- good paired w/BBQ or other rich, spicy foods.
Big Eye IPA (7%)- would accent anything bitter (peppery, citrusy/tart, arugula)- American style, has tons of hops- bittering, flavoring and aromatic hops, added at different stages of boiling = big bouquet, lots of floral characteristics. Hops are from Pacific Northwest, have citrusy, grapefruity character. Other beers use different hops and lower quantities of them.
Black Marlin Porter (5.5%)- good with desserts
Hops is like the grape is to wine. Gives you the upfront flavors of the beer.
