Local Fish List
These are each of the major commercial fish taken from San Diego waters. The most important fisheries are at the top based on volume of catch. Catch volume is from commercial landing documentation and compiled by the Department of Fish and Game on this Commercial Fish Landings Spreadsheet.
Our top fisheries are squid and sardines, but offloading of these is done in San Pedro in Los Angeles. Sea urchin is our largest truly local fishery, followed by swordfish, lobster, rockfish, crab, opah, prawns, and sablefish (black cod). Other smaller fisheries include sheephead, white sea bass, halibut, tuna, and yellowtail, as well as numerous other fish.
