Presidential Debates
elena — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 10:18
Hello! I got a call from a neighbor recently asking if Sea Rocket would show the Presidential Debates at the bistro and I thought it was a great idea. Last Monday, it seemed like everyone stayed home to watch them, so now you can come out for a bite AND keep up with the latest in this momentous political time. Join us between 6-7:30pm and we'll have the debates (with sound) playing on our TV at the bar. Stay afterward to discuss the issues if you like. We hope to see you there!

Can you believe that's the San Diego skyline in the background? Paul Maschka and his team at San Diego City College are working on their new urban farm. Here are some more pictures. Come join their Food and Farm Festival on October 16th from 10am to 2pm. Check out their farm blog.
Commercial Fisheries Revitalization

Last week we had lunch with Henry Pontarelli and Kathryn Gillick who are working on the Commercial Fisheries Revitalization Project. You may not have heard anything about this project, but the Port of San Diego is administering a half million dollar grant to the project, so it's pretty significant in terms of funding towards a project that can have a positive effect on our local food system.
Beer Poached Figs

Almost all figs in the United States come from California and we often find them available in our own backyards during the summer months and into Fall. Lately we've been picking figs at a neighbor's house and I've been poaching them to serve at our restaurant. Poaching them lightly in rich caramel and chocolate tones of porter beer highlights the sweetness of the figs. The addition of the tangy yet lightly sweetened goat cheese complements the figs and syrup in a surprisingly uplifting way.
